School prayer case heads to trial

School prayer case heads to trial

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

NEW ORLEANS [AP] — A judge has set a Nov. 23 trial date for a lawsuit challenging a Louisiana school board's policy of opening its meetings with a prayer.

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman is scheduled to hear the case against the Tangipahoa Parish School Board without a jury.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana sued the school board on behalf of an unidentified couple who have had two children enrolled in the district.

The ACLU claims the school board exploited its policy to promote Christianity. The school board says its policy passes constitutional muster.
