Firm seeks veto of workers comp bill

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

BATON ROUGE [AP] — An insurance trade association is asking Gov. Bobby Jindal to veto a bill that would expand the time for filing a workers' compensation claim from two to three years.

The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America says it sent a letter to Jindal asking him to reject the bill by Alexandria Rep. Chris Roy.

Supporters of the proposal say it would help workers with injuries that may be work-related but may not be diagnosed quickly. The insurers group says the change could increase fraudulent claims and lawsuits and could lead to higher worker's compensation rates for businesses.

The House voted 79-14 for the bill, and the Senate agreed 21-7.

A Jindal spokesman says the governor has "serious concerns" with the bill, but didn't say whether the governor will veto it.
